What is reflexology?

This gentle and relaxing therapy works by encouraging the body to restore and maintain its own natural equilibrium so that it can repair and heal itself.

Reflexology is a "holistic" therapy which means that it aims to treat the "whole" person - body, mind and spirit - and not just our symptoms. It is also a complementary therapy: in other words, it works alongside and complements conventional medicine rather than aiming to replace it.

By applying pressure to specific points on the feet (and sometimes the hands), a professionally trained reflexologist can detect subtle imbalances, release blockages and restore the flow of energy within the body. The theory is that specific points in the feet and hands (called reflexes) are mirrored in the body and that applying pressure to these reflexes can bring about a positive effect in the corresponding organ or system of the body.

Physical and emotional well-being is restored whilst the powerful health benefits of detoxification and improved circulation will leave you feeling energised and refreshed.

Reflexology is also incredibly relaxing. It’s a time for you to switch off and let yourself be pampered whilst allowing feelings of stress and anxiety to melt away.

How can it help me?

Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. However, reflexology has been shown to be effective in the treatment of:

• Anxiety and stress related conditions
• Arthritis
• Asthma and respiratory problems
• Back and shoulder pain
• Depression
• Dermatitis and eczema
• Digestive disorders including constipation & IBS
• Headaches and migraine
• Hormonal problems including PMT, menopausal symptoms and fertility problems
• Insomnia and sleep disorders
• Sinusitis and allergies
• Swollen, puffy feet and ankles (e.g. during pregnancy, after flying, in hot weather)

Reflexology may also help to increase energy levels, improve circulation and facilitate the elimination of toxins from the body. There is even some evidence that reflexology can help the immune system to fight off illness.

Many people simply use reflexology as a way to unwind the mind and body and it is certainly a very relaxing treatment and excellent for helping you get a good night’s sleep.

Who is reflexology suitable for?

Since reflexology is completely non-invasive, it is suitable for everyone including children, pregnant women and the elderly.
